About the webinar

Separating students into ‘ability’ or attainment groups enables teachers to stretch the most ‘able’ students and to support those who are ‘struggling’. While the rationale is understandable, the evidence suggests that grouping by attainment typically exacerbates inequalities in education rather than reducing them. As a result, de-streaming is a hot topic in many secondary school mathematics and statistics departments, with many schools making the change, or planning to make the change.

In this webinar, we will explore the research and discuss two definitions of acceleration to support leaders and teachers to arrange successful learning of mathematics for all ākonga. We will also consider differentiation and multilevel teaching, curriculum design, and teaching practice. This webinar to designed for school leaders and maths teachers who are looking to make the shift to de-streaming in their classrooms.
