Leading change

It is critical our education system continues to evolve and remains focussed on delivering equitable and excellent outcomes for all Aotearoa New Zealand’s children and young people. The curriculum refresh is aimed at ensuring all ākonga experience rich and responsive learning.

The Aotearoa New Zealand histories curriculum is a significant component of the national refresh and by creating opportunities for local communities to share their stories that shaped their focusing on critical citizenship.

The new curriculum brings to the foreground the study of Aotearoa New Zealand Histories by critically examining the big ideas:

  • the foundational and continuous history of Māori,
  • the impact of colonisation and settlement,
  • the power people and groups hold,
  • and the relationships that have shaped our history

The curriculum content supports students to garner rich learning experiences locally, regionally and nationally from a variety of teachers in collaboration with whānau, hāpori (local community) and iwi.

There are a lot of ideas to unpack and contextualise for your own school community. The Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories poutama – self review tool is a good place to start, and we can help.
