CULTURAL CAPABILITY

When teachers and kaiako are culturally capable, they are aware of practices that perpetuate discrimination, racism and inequity.

We prioritise supporting teaching that integrates students’ diverse cultural backgrounds, identities, and experiences, fostering an inclusive learning environment that values all perspectives. Our focus is on equipping educators with the necessary skills for effective culturally responsive teaching.

Our approach involves addressing discrimination and inequity practices within Māori and Pacific communities, and the wider population. Drawing on our work with thousands of schools, we emphasise the importance of building strong relationships with students, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds, to foster equitable outcomes.

Our specialised Cultural Capability team assists school leaders in understanding their diverse communities, enabling educators to build meaningful connections with all students.

LOCAL CURRICULUM DESIGN

Curriculum design inspired by your community.

We love putting together relevant and engaging curricula that meet the different needs of ākonga, whānau and communities across New Zealand. By applying innovative design methods to Te Mātaiaho, the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum, our consultants can support your school or Kāhui Ako to respond to the uniqueness and diversity of your community and all ākonga.

Cognition has a rich history in supporting schools to localise their curriculum to be unique and responsive to the priorities, preferences, and issues of your community and ākonga. We work with you to design a personalised local curriculum that involves authentic consultation with all stakeholders. We will support you to enact your vision, values, and strategic goals while working alongside your leaders and teachers to implement a range of relevant, engaging, and connected learning experiences.

Let’s work together to design and implement your local curriculum framed within a whakapapa that connects all the components of Te Mātaiaho. Components that lay a foundation to take action, be local, express the vision and values of young people, and progresses ākonga beyond the horizon.

If you’d like to find out more about how to get your new curriculum underway, please get in touch with us.

“As a newly formed senior leadership team we identified that our school needed to review, refine and renew our school curriculum. Cognition Education supported and guided us through the PLD application process which was a huge time saver for me. We are now 1 year into our contract and have already established a new school Vision and Mission, and we are now developing our Graduate Profile.

Jenna navigated us through the staff, student and community consultation process by ensuring that we focused on being authentic and purposeful. There is a great feeling at the school at the moment as there is the true belief that we are on a mission. I would highly recommend the Local Curriculum PLD with Cognition.”
