Ministry of Education National Priorities
Cognition Education strongly believes in supporting schools to achieve equity and excellence for all learners. The new National Priorities and Cross Cutting themes put in place gives schools the framework to support change and see improvement for all learners, no matter who they are or where they have come from.
Cognition Education is an experienced PLD provider, with strong expertise in Cultural Capability, Local Curriculum Design, Assessment for Learning and Digital Fluency. Using The Cognition Way to discover, design, deliver and evaluate we are able to support teachers and kaiako in Primary, Secondary schools and Col l Kāhui Ako to provide more responsive and rich learning experiences for all ākonga and students.
The vision for education in Aotearoa New Zealand
Whakamaua te pae tata kia tina | Take hold of your potential so it becomes your reality.
We are descendants of explorers, discoverers and innovators who used their knowledge to traverse distant horizons. Our learning will be inclusive, equitable and connected so we progress and achieve advances for our people and their future journeys and encounters.
Whaia te pae tawhiti kia tata | Explore beyond the distant horizon and draw it near.
Increasing knowledge and understanding of culture in your community.
More and more schools are demonstrating their commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnerships and increasing their understanding of tikanga Māori, manaakitanga and their use of te reo Māori. We’re excited about this passion for cultural responsiveness and want to help your school embrace and enhance it.
When teachers and kaiako are culturally capable, they are aware of practices that perpetuate discrimination, racism and inequity. The questions we all seek the answer to are; ‘How best to do this?’ ‘What actually works?’ and ‘Does it have a measurable impact?’
Cognition Education’s team have learned from our work with over 175 schools in Aotearoa that effective relationships are at the heart of all learning. Cognition’s Relationships First programme supports educators to build effective relationships with students, with a specific emphasis on marginalised students. We help ensure that your teaching and learning culture is capable of achieving equitable and excellent outcomes for Māori. It is based on over a decade’s worth of research into what works best for indigenous and minoritized students, looking at the factors necessary to transform their schooling experience from one of failure, to one of success.
Our Cultural Capability team can support school leaders to gain knowledge and understanding of the diverse cultures in your school community, whilst developing culturally capable teachers who have effective relationships with all ākonga.

LOCAL CURRICULUM DESIGN
Curriculum design inspired by your community.
We love putting together relevant and engaging curricula that meet the different needs of ākonga, whānau and communities across New Zealand. By combining innovative design methods, the existing New Zealand Curriculum and a sprinkle of local knowledge, our consultants can find new ways to support your school or Kāhui Ako and make a real difference to student progress and achievement in your area.
Cognition has a rich history in supporting schools to localise their curriculum, having successfully developed the world-renowned Visible Learning research into a professional learning and development programme.
A localised curriculum is your school’s personalised response to the NZC (2007) and the design and review process involves authentic consultation with all stakeholders. We will support you to enact your vision, values and strategic goals while working alongside your leaders and teachers to implement a range of relevant, engaging and connected learning experiences.
Let’s work together to design meaningful and culturally responsive teaching resources that will prepare all students to be confident and connected learners for life.
If you’d like to find out more about how to get your new curriculum underway, please get in touch with Jenna Crowley.
“As a newly formed senior leadership team we identified that our school needed to review, refine and renew our school curriculum. Cognition Education supported and guided us through the PLD application process which was a huge time saver for me. We are now 1 year into our contract and have already established a new school Vision and Mission, and we are now developing our Graduate Profile.
Jenna navigated us through the staff, student and community consultation process by ensuring that we focused on being authentic and purposeful. There is a great feeling at the school at the moment as there is the true belief that we are on a mission. I would highly recommend the Local Curriculum PLD with Cognition.”
ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING
Effective use of assessment tools can enhance progress and achievement.
Cognition’s Assessment for Learning PLD gives your school or Kāhui Ako the knowledge and skills needed to get the most out of your assessment information. Enhancing how assessment is used in schools and directly in the classroom supports learning and wellbeing, informs a school’s local curriculum design, and raises progress and achievement for all ākonga and students.
Through developing Visible Learning Plus, we have a deep understanding of assessment in schools, we can help you design effective assessment for learning practices and advise on how to develop innovative tools and processes to make informed decisions and support student development.
Our consultants will work directly with your staff to help them better understand the assessment information that’s in front of them, then plan and develop effective ways to use it. Their approach is always centred around how to make sure ākonga are supported to be active participants in their own learning.

“The Assessment for Learning processes facilitated by Cognition Education stimulated reflection and motivated the further pursuit of knowledge by teachers in our Kāhui Ako and our teachers have definitely increased their capacity to influence learning.”
Understanding how technology can change the way we learn.
These days, digital technology plays an important part in the lives of both students and teachers. We can help you and your team to become fluent in speaking the ‘language of digital’ and become confident using technology to its full potential in the classroom to enhance learning outcomes.
Cognition’s experience in digital education strategy makes it easy to develop new school management processes, help set and achieve local curriculum goals, develop infrastructure management, assessment for learning and so much more. We also use eLearning tools to give all students the best possible shot at achieving their dreams and show them how to be good digital citizens along the way.
Through our partners New Era Technology we can find the best solutions to technical issues if they’re ever needed.
