Join Cognition Education’s maths experts for a workshop series that explores teaching algebra.

Cognition Education are hosting a set of three after-school, online workshops that focus on building key knowledge and understanding for algebra taught in years 1- 8.

These workshops are designed for Primary and Intermediate School Classroom Teachers (and leaders), to develop content knowledge and pedagogical thinking. Participants will work through rich tasks to examine the key ideas and progressions in the Algebra strand. Each online workshop will target two levels of the curriculum.

Workshop One

Wednesday 17th August,

Time: 3:30-5:00

For teachers of levels 1-2 . Teachers will develop their knowledge and understanding of levels 1-2 of the Algebra Strand of the New Zealand curriculum. Teachers will work through rich tasks focusing on the big ideas that ākonga need to develop about patterns & relationships, and equations and expressions within mathematics. The workshops will also explore algebra links within the strands.

Workshop Two

Wednesday 24th August.

Time: 3:30-5:00

For teachers of levels 2-3 . Teachers will develop their knowledge and understanding of levels 2-3 of the Algebra Strand of the New Zealand curriculum. Teachers will work through rich tasks focusing on the big ideas that ākonga need to develop about patterns & relationships, and equations and expressions within mathematics. The workshops will also explore algebra links within the strands.

Workshop three

Tuesday 6 September

Time: 3:30-5:00

For teachers of levels 3-4 . Teachers will develop their knowledge and understanding of levels 3-4 of the Algebra Strand of the New Zealand curriculum. Teachers will work through rich tasks focusing on the big ideas that ākonga need to develop about patterns & relationships, and equations and expressions within mathematics. The workshops will also explore algebra links within the strands.

Pricing

A booking fee is additional.

Cost $80 per workshop or schools can purchase the series of the three workshops for $225

Sarah Thomas

Sarah is based in Nelson and has spent the last four years as an across COL Lead teacher, implementing the Relationships First Programme. Sarah has become a trained Impact Coach, voice collector and leader in the Relationships First space. Now, Sarah is looking to work with more schools across the region to build collective capability and share the Relationships First Mahi.

Sarah is also a skilled mathematician and supports schools with Assessment for Learning and Cultural capability through a Mathematics lens. With years of practical experience in the classroom, Sarah has a great repour with students, teachers, leaders and whanau alike, and can support your school to make sustainable and worthwhile changes.

Sonja He

Sonja joined Cognition as an education consultant in 2022. She is based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland.

Before joining Cognition’s mathematics team, Sonja was a school maths leader and a team leader in an Auckland normal school. Sonja has taught across all year levels in the Primary sector and has extensive experience reviewing and moderating teaching, learning and assessment; and in facilitating workshops, lessons and PLD for teachers and student teachers.

Sonja has a Master of Education (with First Class Honours) from the University of Auckland specialising in developing students’ mathematical identities through science. Her specific expertise lies in developing cross-curriculum approaches to teaching mathematics.

Sonja is committed to developing confident leaders and learners in STEM and to enhancing localised curriculum to develop meaningful mathematical experiences. She has a deep passion for assisting kaiako to accelerate achievement in maths.
