Building mathematical knowledge: Years 7-8
On behalf of the Ministry of Education, Cognition Education is providing a series of six interactive workshops to help strengthen teachers own mathematical knowledge. The workshops will focus on developing content knowledge from year’s 7 through to year 9. While it is aimed for year 7 and 8 teachers, any classroom teacher can enrol to strengthen their own mathematical knowledge.
The first four workshops are focused on Rational Numbers, and the last two workshops unpack Algebra. The content of each session includes:
- Session 1. Rational numbers: Concepts and representations (what are they – place value – good representations to use)
- Session 2. Rational numbers: Equivalence (simplifying, converting fractions, converting between fractions, decimals and percentages).
- Session 3. Rational numbers: Operations (fractions and decimals)
- Session 4. Rational numbers: Proportional reasoning (finding and using ratios through proportional reasoning)
- Session 5. Algebra: Expressions and equations (algebraic language and notation, and solving equations with variables)
- Session 6. Algebra: Linear patterns and finding the rule (term to term, and position to term with tables/XY, etc)

Workshop series and dates
The workshops will run as a series of six workshops, you can enrol for the full series, or you can enrol for the sessions of your choice. The series of six workshops will be run six times over the school year 2026. There will also be an opportunity to engage with these workshops in 2027.

Registration information
You can attend the series as an individual, a syndicate or full staff. We do encourage sharing a computer or casting to a screen. If you are going to be in different areas of your school please register each person who will be connecting a device to the session. The sessions do have a cap on numbers. Prior to each workshop you will be sent a list of equipment to have available to engage with the mathematical tasks in the workshop. Workshops enrolments will close 2 days prior to the event, or when the cap of attendees has been reached.
